DOH: State adds 845 new COVID-19 cases, including 162 on the Big Island

The Big Island Friday reported 162 new cases of COVID-19, accounting for just under a fifth of the 845 cases reported statewide.

With the new cases, the Big Island’s tally reached 6,165 and state 54,443. Hawaii County had a 7.9% positivity rate, just over the statewide 7.8% positivity rate.

According to the DOH, 8,842 new cases have been reported in Hawaii in the past 14 days, including 1,554 on the Big Island. There has been an average of 661 new cases the past seven days statewide with the Big Island averaging 119.1 cases per day.

On the Big Island, Kailua-Kona and Hilo have reported the most cases over the past two weeks with 390 and 420 cases, respectively.

On Friday, 39 people with COVID-19 were hospitalized on the Big Island. Just two of the island’s 24 ICU beds were available with 11 of the beds occupied by COVID-positive patients. Eight of those 11 patients are on ventilators.

The state Friday reported four new coronavirus-related deaths, two on Maui and two on Oahu. Of the 562 deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 433 were on Oahu, 64 were on Maui, 59 were on the Big Island and three on Kauai. Three deaths were among residents outside the state.

• Noon to 4 p.m. Monday at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium on Manono Street in Hilo. Testing provided by KTA Super Stores.

• Noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Kona Community Aquatic Center on Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona. Testing provided by KTA Super Stores.

• 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Volcano Cooper Center on Wright Road in Volcano. Testing provided by Premier Medical Group.

• 1:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Volcano Cooper Center on Wright Road in Volcano. Testing provided by Premier Medical Group.

• Noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Aupuni Center on Pauahi Street in Hilo. Testing provided by Premier Medical Group.

Note: There is no testing currently scheduled by the county on Sunday, Aug. 22.
