Grocery bundles to be distributed Monday
The Ironman Foundation will hold its next drive-through Kahiau Together grocery bundle distribution event this Monday in Kailua-Kona.
The distribution will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Kona International Marketplace in Kailua-Kona. The bundles feature locally sourced fresh proteins, fruits, vegetables, and starches. This event’s theme is Surf and Turf and is being held in honor of Duke Kahanamoku, who was born in August.
The foundation, Ironman’s nonprofit arm, has pledged $1 million to provide hunger relief to the island. Since last July, tens of thousands of meals have been served through over a dozen distribution events.

Park to close for
vectrol control
Old Kona Airport Park will be closed for half of the day Aug. 18 to permit safe spraying to control the fire ant population.
The gates will remain closed until the treatment has dried and the park determined safe for use, probably around 11 a.m. The closure will affect the tennis courts, playground, walking path and beach pavilions. The pool and gym complex will not be affected by this closure.
Hull honored by American Academy of Chefs
Jean Hull was recently awarded the Chef Good Taste Award in Orlando, Florida, by the American Academy of Chefs.
The AAC presents this award to an academy fellow who has been actively involved in furthering the culinarian’s greatest achievements and upholding the traditions of classical cuisine.
Hull is credited with bringing higher education to West Hawaii in the early 1990s by designing the food service curriculum approved by the University of Hawaii accreditation committee. This effort laid the foundation for a two-year Associate of Science degree program at Hawaii Community College-West Hawaii.
Hull, as associate professor/food service, was chosen as the Top Educator by the University of Hawaii Community Colleges, receiving the Kunimoto Award in 2000. From 1989-2001 she taught and coordinated the Culinary Program at HCC-West Hawaii.
For over 30 years, Hull has designed benefits for her local American Culinary Federation Kona Kohala Chapter such as, “Christmas with the Chefs,” which raises over $40,000 each year for scholarship awards and equipment needs for HCC-Palamanui culinary students and for continuing education for cooks and chefs.
