After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, cyclists returned to the bottom of Kaloko Drive to compete in the prestigious Pedal Till Ya Puke 6.5-mile hill climb event on Sunday.
The punishing climb is known among elite cyclists for being a personal testament of pure grit as riders ascend a staggering 3,000 feet in elevation with several sections showcasing quad-busting 20% gradients.
This year brought a new change as the event has also been known to feature a grueling running segment — Run Till Ya Ralph — that unfortunately, could not happen.
However, finishing first on Sunday and winning the “King of the Mountain” title was Sean Maynard. The Kailua-Kona resident powered up the climb in a time of 41 minutes and 12 seconds. Next to finish in the men’s division was Alan Eriksson in 45:22 with Chris DeMarchi in third at 46:14.
In the women’s division, Anna Thomas claimed the top spot with her time of 1:07:16. Lori Montgomery, who was the only other female to brave the climb, finished next in 1:30:08.
