Firefighters quickly contained a brush fire that broke out Wednesday evening on the north side of Daniel K. Inouye Highway in South Kohala.
The fire, reported shortly before 5 p.m., was located on the Waimea side of the highway, between mile markers 49 and 50, according to the U.S. Army Garrison Pohakuloa. Hawaii County and U.S. Army assets were working to mop up the fire in the Keamuku Maneuver Area as of press-time.
Hawaii County officials later Wednesday reported the fire burned about 10 acres.
No road closures were reported.
The fire reported Wednesday evening ignited as a 40,000-plus-acre fire continues to burn within its containment line on the slope of Maunakea.
