Stephen Winn

Stephen Joseph Winn, 71, of Honaunau, died Aug. 2, 2021, at his residence. Born July 20, 1950 in Wiesbaden, Germany, he was a general contractor and owner of Winn Construction.

Private service to be held at a later date.

He is survived by daughter, Maggie (Adam) Sleeper of California; stepdaughter, Melinda Lacey of Honaunau; stepson, Oliver Lacey of California; brothers, William (JoAnn) Winn of Virginia, and Michael Winn of California; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth Tasaka

Ruth Tokie Tasaka, 98, of Honokaa, died July 23, 2021, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Oct. 2, 1922, in Honokaa, she was a retired clerk from the former Davies Hamakua Sugar Co. and member of the Honokaa Hongwanji Mission and Buddhist Women’s Association.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts.

She is survived by brother-in-law, Masao Tasaka of Honokaa; sisters-in-law, Nancy Kaaekuahiwi of Honokaa, and Ruth Akiko Dumadag of Kaneohe, Oahu; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen Napeahi

Helen Kamanookalaniipo Napeahi, 69, of Hilo, died July 8, 2021, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, she was a resident manager with Hilo Val Hala and Hale Aloha Apartments, a school bus driver for Roberts Hawaii, and a member of the Keaukaha Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Patricia Matsumoto

Patricia Colleen Matsumoto, 79, of Pahoa, died July 31, 2021, at her residence. Born in California, she was an antiques dealer, former ballet dancer, and member of the Rainbow Girls.

She is survived by daughters, Michelle (Darrell) Aquino of Kailua, Oahu, Stephanie Dunnam of Pahoa, and Sarah DeMarcus of San Diego; sons, Glen DeMarcus III of San Antonio, Texas, and Cary Stock of Leavenworth, Washington; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Edward Kinzie

Edward Kanahele Kinzie, 49, of Hilo and formerly of Kauai, died July 1, 2021, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a groundskeeper at Hawaii Community College and a former cook at Kulani Prison.

Friends may call at noon Aug. 14 at Onekahakaha Beach Park Pavilions #2 and #3 for a celebration of life’s. Casual attire.

He is survived by fiancé, Karen Otsubo of Hilo; daughter, Kaylyn (Sheldon Ozeki) Otsubo of Hilo; sons, Kobie (Mariah Higashi) Kinzie and Kedren Kinzie, all of Hilo; mother, Paula (Randy) Silva of Kalaheo, Kauai; father, Patrick (Nohea) Kinzie of Anahola, Kauai; maternal grandmother, Damiana Vierra of Honolulu; sister, Sheri Kinzie of Kalaheo, Kauai; brothers, Kapono Kinzie of Kalaheo, Kauai, and Keone Kinzie and Kaimana Kinzie, all of Anahola, Kauai; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mariano Calpito

Mariano Tango Calpito, 66, of Waimea, died July 18, 2021, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. He was born July 22, 1954, in Ballesteros, Cagayan, Philippines.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. Aug. 17 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 6 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 9 a.m. Aug. 18 at the mortuary for a 10 a.m. service. Burial follows at Alae Cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Soledad Calpito of Waimea; daughters, Maricel (Tony) Badon of Waikoloa, Maryjane (Roger) Rafael, Marivic (Jonas) Uberita and Mariehnor (Renato) Remolacio of Manila, Philippines; son, Marjohn (Lesly) Calpito of Cagayan, Philippines; sister, Lilian (Gregorio) Tablit of Waimea; brothers, Arsenio (Imelda) Calpito of Las Vegas, and Lito (Evangeline) Calpito of Cagayan, Philippines; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rodney Soares

Rodney Charles Soares, 72, of Mountain View, died July 8, 2021, at his residence. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired crane operator for Stevedore Local R56-099 working out of Pearl Harbor Navy Shipyard and a U.S. Navy Vietnam War veteran.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Aug. 14 at New Hope Volcano for a celebration of life.

He is survived by spouse, Andreana Soares; daughters, Rhonda Soares and Rochelle Soares; step-son, Darren Alameida; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers; two sisters; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and hanai children.

Ricky Shibata

Ricky Tetsuo Shibata, 58, of Hilo, died July 18, 2021 at the Straub Clinic &Hospital in Honolulu. Born May 4, 1963, in Hilo, he was an Auto Body Mechanic and member of the Komohana Gardens Association.

Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 10 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 10:30 a.m. service. Entombment will follow at Homelani Memorial Park Mausoleum in Hilo. Casual attire is requested.

He is survived by mother, Florence Shibata of Hilo; sisters, Suzanne Kong of Hilo and Sandee (John) Gee of Long Beach, California; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces and cousins.
