Big Island police arrested 13 motorists for suspected drunken driving Aug. 2 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
Kona officers arrested seven drivers while South Hilo officers arrested four, according to data released Monday afternoon by the Hawaii Police Department. Puna and North Kohala officers arrested one motorist in each district.
So far this year, there have been 687 DUI arrests compared with 540 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 474 major accidents so far this year compared with 469 during the same period last year.
As of Monday, 13 fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, 12 people had died.
