Kona Commons to host vaccination clinic
COVID-19 vaccinations will be available Saturday, Aug. 14, at Kona Commons Shopping Center, just outside Jean’s Warehouse.
Vaccinations will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon with no need for pre-registration. Those seeking to be vaccianted are asked to bring an ID and insurance card. There is no charge for the vaccine.
Residents over the age of 18 may receive a COVID-19 vaccination. Moderna (two doses, four weeks apart) and Johnson &Johnson’s (single dose) vaccines will be available. Health professionals with the West Hawaii Community Health Center will register, screen, vaccinate and monitor vaccine recipients. They will also offer blood pressure and blood sugar checks.
Zonta Club announces scholarships, awards
The Zonta Club of Hilo announces $10,000 in scholarships and awards given in 2021.
“We are proud to applaud the achievements of 10 outstanding women on Hawaii Island this year,” said Nina Buchanan, Zonta Club of Hilo Scholarship Chair.
The Young Woman in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award encourages young women, ages 16-19, to participate in public affairs by recognizing a commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements, and a dedication to empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.
The 2021 YWPA recipients are Maya Atwal, Waiakea High; Sophia Perry, Kamehameha Schools; Cami Oyama, Hilo High; Sara Kimura, Hawaii Preparatory Academy; and JoHannah Palm, Youth Challenge Academy.
The Women’s Nursing Degree Scholarship is for women of any age enrolled in a nursing degree program at the University of Hawaii at Hilo (UHH) or Hawaii Community College (HCC) who demonstrate high academic achievement, interest in continuing their nursing studies toward an advanced degree or leadership track, and are recommended by program faculty.
The 2021 UHH recipients are Maria Aurelio, Jo-Anna Moniz, and Brooke Sakuma. The 2021 HCC recipients are Abigail Calo, Mikayla Kelsom, and Deisha-Lyn Nurial-DaCalio. Each have received a $1,000 award.
The Jane M. Klausman (JMK) Women in Business Scholarship is for women of any age enrolled in at least the second year of an undergraduate program through the final year of a master’s program who demonstrate outstanding potential in the field. The 2021 JMK recipient is UHH student Allison Dupre, who received a $1,000 scholarship.
Dupre and Atwal, the top winners in the JMK and YWPA categories, have been advanced from the club level to compete for additional awards and scholarships at the district and international level of Zonta.
