COVID-19 case count continues to grow

The Big Island reported 63 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, sending the island’s total case count to 4,353.

Of the 346 new cases reported by the Department of Health on Wednesday, 223 were on Oahu, 29 in Maui County and five on Kauai. Twenty-six cases were reported from residents who tested positive out of state.

Since the end of last February, 43,962 people have tested positive for COVID-19 across Hawaii.

The Big Island had a 7.8% seven-day positivity rate, over the state’s 6.5% positivity rate on Wednesday. Over the last 14 days, 845 cases have been reported on the Big Island. Over the past week, the island has reported an average of 80.6 cases per day.

There were 155 individuals statewide hospitalized on Wednesday including 21 on the Big Island.

No new deaths were reported by the DOH on Wednesday. Of the 538 deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 413 were on Oahu, 61 were on Maui, 58 were on the Big Island and two on Kauai. Three deaths were among residents outside the state.

Community testing and vaccination sites will remain at the Kona Community Aquatic Center on Tuesdays and the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo on Wednesdays. Testing and vaccinations are free to the public for non-travel-related purposes.
