Several acres of ohia forest were charred Tuesday after a fire broke out off Upper Puna Road in Pahoa.
Responding to the 1:13 p.m. report, Hawaii Fire Department personnel arrived in the area of Upper Puna Road to find a brush fire about 3 acres in size on both sides of the roadway. Burning were uluhe ferns, ohia trees and grass and other brush.
Firefighters had difficulty accessing the fire, and had to make multiple trails to reach the flames. A county helicopter also assisted with water bucket drops.
The fire was declared under control about 5 p.m. Firefighters remained on the scene throughout the night to monitor the fire.
