The iconic band Kapena — featuring Kelly Boy, Kapena, Kalena, and Lilo — will perform from the Luau Grounds of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel next weekend.
Kapena, considered to be one of Hawaii’s premier island bands has more than 20 CDs to their credit. The group continues to be an institution that embraces what islanders fell in love with when fans first heard the unique sound of their “electrifying” music.
In the early 2000s, Kelly Boy introduced Hawaii to the next generation of Kapena, by adding his three children — Kapena, Kalena and Lilo to the group. This next generation brought a fresh and new Kapena sound. Outside of Kapena, Kelly Boy’s three children have gained success of their own, writing new original music and being nominated and winning multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.
In October 2017, Kapena released its first full-length album as a family band titled “Palena Ole.” The album won the group four awards at the 2018 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards including Album Of The Year and Group Of The Year. This new Kapena band offers a diverse new package for the old diehard Kapena fans, as well as for the new generation of Kapena fans.
“We are so thankful that we have been in this business for so long, and we have people that just support us, and support our music,” Kalenaku De Lima said. “I’ve had people who’ve come up to me and go, ‘Kapena is the playlist of my life,’ and I’m forever thankful, forever grateful.”
“Kapena” will livestream from the Luau Grounds of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel at 7 p.m. June 19.
In-person tickets are also available, though capacity is reduced. In-person tickets are $100 and can be purchased at www.kahilutheatre.org.
