Exploring the Big Island through art
The Firehouse Gallery, a program of the Waimea Arts Council presents an art exhibition, “Exploring the Big Island,” featuring art by 23 Big Island artists through June 27.
Think waterfalls, forests, mountains, beaches, lava, flora, and fauna. The artwork in the show are originals, ready to hang, and priced at affordable levels. Each artist donates a percentage of any sale to support the program’s operation.
The exhibit featured an open call for any artist on the Big Island to submit pieces for consideration without fees. Pieces selected for the exhibition were curated by Irina V. Place.
“In my selection, I was guided by the thought that ‘Exploring the Big Island’ is not only about the views of the island but also about discovering how artists interpret their experiences of living in Hawaii, what moves the creativity and how it could be conveyed through art,” said Place.
The Firehouse Gallery, a program of the Waimea Arts Council, is a venue to support the local art community by exhibiting affordable art, plus it serves as a marketing opportunity for local artists. It is located in the old, historic South Kohala fire station at the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway and Lindsey Road in Waimea.
The gallery is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday through Sunday. A catalog of the show can be seen on the group’s Facebook page: Firehouse Gallery and Waimea Arts Council.

Author to discuss new book
Carolyn Gross, author of “Rise Above the Chaos,” will returning to the Big Island to appear in a virtual event at Kona Stories Book Store at 10 a.m. June 19.
Gross, who resides in Palm Springs, California, is a professional speaker, executive coach, and healer who has strong ties to Hawaii. She has appeared at Kona Stories Book Store for live events during her many visits to Hawaii over the last 30 years, studied healing one-on-one with lomilomi master Auntie Margaret Machado, spoken at various festivals and facilitated spa retreats at the Hilton Waikoloa.
Her passion is helping people rise above chaos and gravitate to health. As an award-winning speaker, and founder of Rise Above the Chaos Online Leadership programs, she has appeared on NBC, ABC, and Lifetime TV. Her extensive research to the Hawaiian ways provides a multitude of solutions to her clients around the globe.
During the Kona Stories Book store event, she will be sharing advice from her latest book “Rise Above the Chaos: How to Keep Positive in an Unsettled World” about how to deal with internal and external stress and the great Global Shuffle as we work to find our way back to our new life.

Kona Aloha Singers seeks members
The Kona Aloha Singers, directed by Katya Eddy, is looking for new members.
The group sings pop and rock music from the 1960s through today, including The Beach Boys, Simon &Garfunkel and others. Membership is open to adults and high school students. Cost is $90 for adults and $35 for high school students, plus $45 for sheet music.
Rehearsals take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays at Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, 77-165 Lako St., in Kailua-Kona. An open house rehearsal is set for Aug. 3.

Chamber Music Series continues
Ohrlando’s Chamber Ensemble continues its Chamber Music Series via YouTube Live Stream at 5 p.m. June 20.
The program will feature pieces from “Viennese Classic” period that is dominated by two names: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn. The ensemble will also feature compositions by lesser known relatives, father Leopold and son Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart and Haydn’s younger brother, Michael Haydn.
Performing will be Roland Maurer on oboe, English-horn and bassoon, and Ursula Hesse on piano.
