DWS offices to reopen June 1
The Hawaii County Department of Water Supply will reopen its offices to walk-in services effective June 1.
To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, protocols including mask wearing, social distancing and hand disinfection will be required when visiting the offices.
Customers and members of the public will be able to start a new water service, obtain help with an existing water account, pay a water bill, or receive other in-person assistance. No appointments will be necessary. The offices will be open to the public Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
Big Island UH faculty honored
The University of Hawaii recently honored top faculty for their innovation and commitment to educating students and for their cutting-edge research.
Fifteen UH faculty members from across the state have been awarded the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching, and three received the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research.
In addition, six UH teachers have been recognized with the Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. A Kaua‘i Community College student and taro farmer has won the Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Vocational Education.
“Our extraordinary, innovative, caring University of Hawaii faculty are second to none,” said UH President David Lassner. “Especially in these challenging times, their dedication and commitment elevates and inspires our students even as their scholarship and engagement helps address pressing global issues and improve lives across our islands.”
Big Island recipients included Tanya Dean, assistant professor of English, Hawaii Community College – Palamanui and Justina Taft Mattos, assistant professor of drama and performing arts, University of Hawaii-Hilo, who each were awarded the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching, which recognizes faculty who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity, and personal values beneficial to students. Earning the Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, which recognizes dedication and demonstrated excellence as teachers of undergraduate students, were Ruria Namba, biology instructor, Hawaii Community College – Palamanui, and Lissa Tsutsumi, assistant professor of applied agricultural science and biotechnology, UH-Hilo.
