Memorial Day ceremony set
The American Legion Kona Post 20 will host the annual Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. May 31 at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kailua-Kona.
The ceremony will be abbreviated in order to comply with COVID-19 requirements. The program includes Posting of Colors, Special Detail Firing honors and reading of recently deceased veteran’s names.
Local Boy Scouts Troops will place mini U.S. flags and Hawaii Government Employees Association volunteers will place leis on every grave and colombarium.
The event is open to the public but COVID-19 requirements of social distancing and wearing of face masks will be observed. Seating will also be limited. There will be no potluck luncheon or gathering after the ceremony.

Zero Waste Summit
Registration is open for the virtual Hawaii Zero Waste Summit set to take place via Zoom on Friday.
Sponsored by state Sen. Laura Acasio (D-Hilo) and nonprofit Zero Waste Oahu, community group Zero Waste Hawaii Island presents
The second Hawaii Zero Waste Summit, a free public event, will run 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and feature a keynote by Kamanamaikalani Beamer on the intersection of Aloha Aina and circular economies will set the stage for panels featuring SKY Kombucha, Full Cycle Takeout, Returnity and r.Cup focusing on building reuse systems in Hawaii.
The summit we will then dive into Extended Producer Responsibility and Reuse Policy with the Hawaii Wildlife fund, state Rep. Nicole Lowen and nonprofit UPSTREAM.
The summit will also spotlight the need for creating pathways to community composting with Ma‘ona Community Garden, Hawaiian Earth Recycling, Kokua Hawaii Foundation, West Maui Green Cycle, and Soil Culture Consulting Services.
There will also be opportunities for participants to network and updates given by zero waste and waste reduction-centered groups across the state.
