Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for suspected drunken driving May 10 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
Kona officers arrested nine drivers while South Hilo and Puna officers three drivers in each district, according to data released Wednesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala officers also arrested two drivers.
So far this year, there have been 477 DUI arrests compared with 327 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 295 major accidents so far this year compared with 306 during the same period last year.
As of Wednesday, 10 fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, eight people had died.
