An agriculture storage building at Moa‘ula Farm was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon in Ka‘u.

Responding to the 1:33 p.m. alarm, Hawaii Fire Department personnel and volunteers from Pahala, Na‘alehu, Volcano and Discovery Harbour arrived at the farm to find a 1,400-square-foot agriculture storage building engulfed in flames with part of the roof collapsing.

The building was located about a quarter mile from the nearest road, requiring the use of smaller vehicles to access the blaze. Further, due to a lack of water resources in the area, a water shuttle operation had be utilized to fight the fire.

The fire was finally declared out at 3:25 p.m.

Damage to the structure, which consisted of a 900-square-foot metal frame agriculture building with a 500-square-foot wood frame attached, was estimated at $52,500.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
