Caden Young has one track and field meet under his belt this year, and with that he has already established himself as one of several standouts from Kealakehe, despite a long time away from BIIF competition.
The Waverider senior finished in first place in four individual events and was part of two winning relay teams Saturday in Waimea at the first of four scheduled BIIF meets. Young finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.10 seconds, first in the 100-meter dash with 11.33, hit 19 feet, 11 inches on the long jump and cleared 5-10 on the high jump.
He was also on the Kealakehe relay teams that won the boys 4×100-meter relay (45.74) and the boys 4×400-meter relay (3:48).
“It feels good to come out and perform, really refreshing,” Young said “Of course, we didn’t have a track meet last year which would have played a big role in this year’s track results, in that I could have done better, but I’m happy.”
Young was a sophomore at Kealakehe last time there was a BIIF meet — almost two years ago. When progressing from an underclassman in high school to a senior, some growth in talent and abilities is expected in an athlete, but Young managed to shatter the expectations of his coaches in the first meet of the shortened season.
“He did phenomenal,” Kealakehe assistant coach Patrick Bradley said. “I mean, way more than we expected. Caden was definitely the superstar of the meet.”
His 5-10 on the high jump tied a Kealakehe High School record, and showed Young has come a long way since his sophomore year, when at the 2019 BIIF championships he cleared 5-05 on the high jump.
“He ran 11.70 and high jumped 5-05 (in 2019), and that was with a full season, so he’s already surpassed his best by far,” Bradley said.
Young believes it will only take the coming week for him to claim the Kealakehe high jump record for himself.
“It feels good knowing that I tied (the record), but I think I can pass it next week,” Young said. “I just need to train a little bit more.”
Behind Young on the high jump Saturday were Kealakehe’s Malchi Lehmann at 5-02 and Aiden Ankrum at 5-00.
Kealakehe sophomore Cozy Wood won the girls 3,000-meter at 11:48.33, well ahead of Hawaii Prep’s Catherine Moynahan and Kendall Scanlan, who came in second and third at 14:25.68 and 14.51:47, respectively.
“Cozy was so strong,” Bradley said. “Cozy is going to be a superstar. I’m really happy with how well she ran.”
Bradley also praised sophomore Cameron Cornforth, who came in second in both the boys 800-meter (2:13.02) and the 1,500-meter (4:40.94). His time in the 1,500-meter was right behind HPA’s Tain Lawson (4:40.66).
“He’s only in 10th grade, so I think he will have a great season,” Bradley said.
The BIIF track and field season was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and although there will be no BIIF or state championships this year either, Young and the Waveriders want to make every moment count.
“It’s incredible. We are just thrilled to be able to coach them,” Bradley said. “And we’re thrilled to even have 19 kids coming out — we usually have 60.”
