Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for suspected drunken driving March 22 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested 10 drivers while South Kohala and Puna officers arrested three in each district, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Hilo officers arrested two and Ka‘u officers one.
So far this year, there have been 302 DUI arrests compared with 262 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 177 major accidents so far this year compared with 232 during the same period last year.
As of Tuesday, seven fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, seven people had died.
