Input sought on outdoor recreation plan
The DLNR Division of State Parks invites the community to participate in updating Hawaii’s Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP).
Preparation of the SCORP every five years maintains the state’s eligibility to receive funds from the LWCF (Land &Water Conservation Fund). LWCF is a federal grant program administered by the National Park Service that assists states and local governments with the acquisition of recreational lands and the development and renovation of recreation facilities. Since 1967, the state and the four counties have received more than $38 million in LWCF grants for the acquisition and development of outdoor recreation lands and facilities.
The 2021 update of the SCORP offers a timely opportunity to re-evaluate Hawaii’s recreational needs and trends of statewide importance. Virtual meetings held in April and May will provide an opportunity for members of the community to identify and discuss recreation needs, trends, and priorities for the acquisition and development of outdoor recreation facilities.

Hawaii Education Association offering scholarships
The nonprofit Hawaii Education Association (HEA) is offering a slate of scholarships for public school teachers, student teachers, college students, and graduating high school seniors. Over the past 20 years, HEA has awarded more than $300,000 to hundreds of scholarship recipients in the teaching profession.
“We want to ensure that the community knows that our scholarship program is still going strong during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said June Motokawa, HEA board president. “Now more than ever, we believe it is vital to support current and aspiring teachers with the resources to be the best they can be. If you are seeking Hawaii State Department of Education licensing or certification, preparing for a student teaching semester, or completing an undergraduate or graduate degree in education, we encourage you to apply for an HEA scholarship.”
HEA offers six types of scholarships across three categories of applicants: public school educators, college students and high school seniors. The deadline to apply for any of the scholarships has been extended to noon on May 14.
