Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for suspected drunken driving March 1 and Sunday. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested 13 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested five and South Kohala officers four, according to data released Wednesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Puna officers arrested three drivers and North Kohala officers arrested two.
So far this year, there have been 228 DUI arrests compared with 218 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 138 major accidents so far this year compared with 191 during the same period last year.
Five fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, six people had died.
