High winds with gusts upward of 50 mph lashed portions of the Big Island over the weekend, toppling at least one under-construction building in South Kohala.
Workers on Monday were inspecting damage to the 10,000-square-foot Building M at the new Waikoloa Plaza Shopping Center after the under-construction structure collapsed amid the strong winds. According to a February update posted by developer Meridian Pacific, Building M was to house Family Health &Wellness, Elevation Medical Imaging, and Waikoloa Suds.
Meridian Pacific did not immediately respond for a request for comment.
Civil Defense and the National Weather Service had received no other reports of damage.
Forecasters had issued a wind advisory on Wednesday, calling for east to northeast winds of 20 mph to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph to impact a good portion of the island. The advisory remained posted through 6 p.m. this morning.
