Monthly siren test scheduled Monday

The monthly test of the all-hazard Statewide Outdoor Warning Siren System, coordinated with the test of the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System, is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Monday.

During this monthly test, all Statewide Outdoor Warning Sirens will sound a one-minute Attention Alert Signal (Steady Tone). A simultaneous test of the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System is conducted with the monthly siren sounding, in cooperation with Hawaii’s broadcast industry. There will be no exercise or drill accompanying the test.

The all-hazard Outdoor Siren Warning System for Public Safety is one part of Hawaii’s Statewide Alert &Warning System used to notify the public during emergencies.

Household hazardous waste collection event set

The Hawaii County Department of Environmental Management will hold a free residential household hazardous waste collection event this coming weekend in South Kohala.

From 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 6, the Waimea Recycling and Transfer Station will accept household hazardous waste items including automotive fluids, used batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and pesticides. For a complete list visit www.hawaiizerowaste.org.

The county holds these regular collection events at no charge to the public, so households can conveniently dispose of acceptable household hazardous waste in a manner that protects both public health and the environment. The events are for household-generated and self-hauled waste only. Business, government agency, nonprofit agency, or farm wastes are prohibited by law. No latex paint, no electronic waste, and no tires will be accepted.

For more information, contact Chris Chin-Chance, Recycling Specialist with the Department of Environmental Management, by calling (808) 961-8554 or email to recycle3@hawaiicounty.gov.

Archery hunting to open in Pu‘uanahulu GMA

Archery hunting in the Pu‘uanahulu Game Management Area begins March 7 and continues weekends and state holidays through June 27.

The daily bag limit will be one pig of either sex, one male sheep (ram), and two goats (any sex) per hunter per day, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife. These are also the season limits for each species.

Hunters will need to obtain 2021 ram and goat tags to legally hunt in the area. Tags may be purchased by mail or at the Pu‘uanahulu Hunter Check Station from 5 a.m. to noon on March 7 and 8. To purchase tags by mail, hunters must send a copy of their 2021 state hunting license, a check or money order payable to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, and a self-addressed stamped envelope to 66-1220 A Lalamilo Road, Kamuela, HI 96743. Sheep and goat tag fees are $10 per tag for residents and $25 per tag for nonresidents.

The harvest tags are not transferable and must be placed through the hind leg of the animal immediately after each kill.

ATVs will be allowed in the area and must remain on designated roads.

To report game law violations or any suspicious activity, call the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement at (808) 974-6208 or (808) 643-DLNR (643-3567).
