One new COVID-19 case was reported Wednesday on the Big Island, bringing the island’s total case count to 2,217.
A total of 29 new cases were reported across the state by the Department of Health with Oahu reporting 16 of those cases, Maui County nine and Kauai zero. Three residents were diagnosed while outside the state.
Statewide, to date, there have been 26,935 people who have tested positive for COVID-19.
The Big Island on Wednesday had a 0.5% test positivity rate, below the statewide rate of 1%.
Over the past two weeks, the Big Island has reported 37 cases or an average of 2 cases per day. Most of the cases have been in West Hawaii with the North Kona area reporting 13 in the past 14 days.
The state Department of Health on Wednesday noted that for a second day, a temporary interruption in electronic laboratory reporting caused cases to be undercounted.
“The DOH Disease Outbreak and Control Division (DOCD) notes all reporting feeds were re-established yesterday by 3:30 p.m. and DOCD expects to see catch-up reporting of additional cases over the next one to two days,” an update reads.
Statewide, 38 people were hospitalized Wednesday, one of whom was receiving care on the Big Island. To date, 2,174 people have required hospitalization, including 114 on the Big Island.
One new coronavirus-related death was reported Wednesday on Oahu by the state. Of the 427 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 341 were on Oahu, 29 were on Maui, 53 were on the Big Island and one on Kauai. Three deaths were among residents outside the state.
The Big Island’s COVID-19 fatality rate remained at 2.4% on Wednesday, above the statewide rate of 1.6%. No deaths have been reported on the Big Island this year.
