A high surf advisory remains posted for west-facing shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. Tuesday.
A large west-northwest swell will continue to impact west-facing shores of the Big Island through this afternoon, according the Honolulu-based National Weather Service forecasters. Wave heights of 6 feet to 9 feet are forecast.
The surf is forecast to fall below advisory levels Tuesday night.
Forecasters cautioned of strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous. Beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution.
Due to the high surf, Hawaii County Civil Defense reported the closure of Mahukona Beach Park in North Kohala. All other beach parks remained open as of about 10 a.m. Tuesday.
