Akiko Yamashita
Akiko Sakaguchi Yamashita, 93, of Keaau, died Feb. 5, 2021, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, she was a member of the Puna Hawaii Pidgin Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Services will be held at a later date.
She is survived by sons, David Yamashita and Kent (Dorothy) Yamashita of Keaau; brother-in-law, Miyoji Furusho of Kauai; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Daniel Nelson
Daniel Peter “Pete” Nelson, 80, of Hilo, died March 30, 2020, in the Hawaii Care Choice Pohai Malama Facility. Born April 24, 1939, in Hilo, he was a retired special education teacher at Hilo High School, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo and a U.S. States Navy veteran.
Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 19 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for Mass. Inurnment will follow at East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 in Hilo. Casual attire is requested.
He is survived by son, Dane Nelson, of Hilo; daughter, Candice (Nathan) Haga, of Irvine, California; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Ethel Nelson
Ethel Ann Nelson, 80, of Hilo, died Dec. 27, 2020, at her residence. Born June 25, 1940, in Hilo, she was a retired educational assistant for state Department of Education and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Ethel Higa
Ethel Ayako Higa, 91, of Pepeekeo, died Feb. 3, 2021, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Hospice Facility. Born in Honolulu, she was the owner of the former Tradewind Flowers on Oahu and member of the Honomu Henjoji Mission and Pepeekeo Senior Citizens.
Private services. Family requests no flowers and no koden (monetary contributions).
She is survived by son, Randall Higa of Pepeekeo; daughter, Joyce Higa of Pepeekeo; grandson, Lawrence (Sara) Higa of Seattle, Washington; brother, James Nakagawa of Los Angeles; sisters, Jean Yoshimura and Helen Wong, both of Kaneohe, Oahu, and Beatrice (Robert) Nakamoto of Vancouver, Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
