A high surf advisory has been posted for east-facing shores of Hawaii Island until 6 p.m. Saturday.
A long-period northwest swell will maintain elevated surf through Saturday afternoon along exposed east-facing shores of the island’s northern, southern and eastern coasts, according to the National Weather Service. Wave heights of 7 feet to 10 feet are forecast.
Forecasters cautioned of strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous. Beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution.
