The dozen Hawaii Island cases were among 108 new cases reported across the state by Sunday by the Department of Health bring the Aloha State’s case tally to 16,519. Oahu reported 89 new cases while Kauai reported three and Maui one. Two residents also tested positive for the virus while outside the state.
Statewide, 63 people were hospitalized Sunday, including 10 on Hawaii Island. Kona Community Hospital reported it had five patients hospitalized as of Friday at its facility with three of those patients in the med-surg acute care unit and two in the intensive care unit. One person was on a ventilator.
No coronavirus-related deaths were reported or confirmed Saturday. Of the 222 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 173 were on Oahu, 17 were on Maui, one on Lanai, 31 were on Hawaii Island and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.
Hawaii County Civil Defense has reported a total of fatalities at 48. The state has yet to confirm 17 of the deaths reported to date on Hawaii Island. Twenty-seven of the deaths were among residents of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo and four were at Kona Community Hospital.
