Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Nov. 2 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.
Kona officers arrested 10 drivers while Puna officers arrested three and Ka‘u officers two, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. So far this year, there have been 835 DUI arrests compared with 933 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 646 major accidents so far this year compared with 823 during the same period last year.
Thirteen fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways, police said. By this time in 2019, 17 people had perished.
