Keola Lindsey defeated Lanakila Mangauil in Tuesday’s general election for the Resident Trustee seat on the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

Lindsey received 231,651 of the 382,005 votes cast in the race, or 60.6%, to Mangauil’s 150,354 votes.

Mangauil and Lindsey were the top two recipients of votes in the Aug. 8 primary election for the trustee representing the Big Island. A total of 11 candidates contended for the position.

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs Board of Trustees is composed of nine members who are elected to serve four-year terms. Four of the seats are “at-large” while the remaining five seats represent Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, Oahu, and Kauai.

All voters statewide are allowed to vote in each OHA contest.

Keola Lindsey’s uncle, Robert K. Lindsey Jr., represented Hawaii Island as an OHA trustee from 2007 to 2020.
