Health officials reported nine new cases of COVID-19 on Hawaii Island on Wednesday, bringing the island’s total case count to 1,091.
The new Hawaii Island cases were among 78 positive results announced by the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center bringing the statewide tally to 14,233 since Feb. 28. Oahu reported 65 new cases while Maui reported four new cases.
DOH’s Maui District Health Office (MDHO) confirmed Tuesday four cases of COVID-19 in residents on the island of Lanai. MDHO was notified about the positive test results Tuesday and is actively performing contact tracing and investigation of the cases.
Initial findings determined that one of the four cases may be associated with recent travel. Three of the cases work at the same location and have symptoms. The fourth case is a healthcare worker who does not provide direct patient care. All four cases are in isolation.
As of noon Wednesday, 2,842 of the 14,233 known cases were considered active, including 287 cases on Hawaii Island. An active case is defined as an individual who has tested positive for the coronavirus and is being monitored by the Department of Health.
Statewide, 1,033 COVID-19 patients have required hospitalization, including 58 on Hawaii Island, according to the center’s noon update.
14 COVID-19 deaths were reported Wednesday by DOH. 10 of those deaths have been reported as the result of updated information received on nursing homes in Hawaii County. The death of those dates range from mid-September to early October, and three of those individuals had been hospitalized at the time of their death. Four more recent deaths were also reported involving O‘ahu residents.
Of the 203 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported to date among Hawaii residents to date, 156 were on Oahu, 18 were on Maui, 28 were on Hawaii Island, and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.
The state has yet to confirm 12 of the 40 coronavirus-related deaths reported on Hawaii Island. Twenty-seven of the deaths were among residents of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo and another seven died at Hilo Medical Center, four at Life Care Center of Hilo and two at Kona Community Hospital.
