Hawaii Island police arrested 30 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Oct. 12 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and one was younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested 12 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested nine and Puna officers seven, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, South Kohala officers arrested two motorists.
So far this year, there have been 781 DUI arrests compared with 889 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 609 major accidents so far this year compared with 782 during the same period last year.
Thirteen fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways, police said. By this time in 2019, 15 people had perished.
