Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Oct. 5 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and four were younger than age 21.
South Hilo and Kona officers arrested 11 drivers in each district while Puna officers arrested two, according to data released Monday afternoon by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, South Kohala officers arrested one motorist.
So far this year, there have been 751 DUI arrests compared with 871 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 592 major accidents so far this year compared with 752 during the same period last year.
Thirteen fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways, police said. By this time in 2019, 15 people had perished.
