Police arrest 25 for suspected drunken driving

Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Sept. 28 and Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested 11 drivers with officers in South Hilo arrested seven and Puna four, according to data released Tuesday afternoon by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, South Kohala officers arrested two motorists and Hamakua officers one.

So far this year, there have been 726 DUI arrests compared with 850 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 584 major accidents so far this year compared with 738 during the same period last year.

Thirteen fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways, police said. By this time in 2019, 14 people had perished.
