All beach parks on Hawaii Island reopen at 7 a.m. today following a nearly monthlong closure to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The beach parks closed Sept. 4 with an exception for certain activities such as exercising, fishing, food gathering, restroom and shower facility use and access to the ocean. The closure was initially expected to last two weeks, but was extended on Sept. 16 to today as virus cases continued to increase in mid-September.
Users must abide by face covering and physical distancing rules and not gather in groups of more than 10 persons, Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim said Wednesday. Camping at all beach and shoreline parks remains prohibited.
