Hawaii Island reported three new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday, bringing the Orchid Isle’s total case count to 703.
The new Hawaii Island cases were among 87 cases reported across the state Tuesday by the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center. Oahu accounted for the majority of the new cases at 80 while Maui County reported two new cases. Two residents were also diagnosed while traveling outside the state.
Since Feb. 28, when the state began testing for the novel coronavirus, Hawaii has recorded 12,290 cases. As of Tuesday, 2,034 of those known cases were considered active, including 105 cases on Hawaii Island. An active case is defined as an individual who has tested positive for the coronavirus and is being monitored by the Department of Health.
Statewide, 832 COVID-19 patients have required hospitalization, including 41 on Hawaii Island, according to the center’s noon update.
The center reported two new deaths Tuesday among Oahu residents. One was a man in is 70s with underlying health conditions and the other a woman in her 50s with no known underlying health conditions. Both had been hospitalized.
Of the 134 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported to date among Hawaii residents, 109 were on Oahu, nine were on Maui, 15 were on Hawaii Island, and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.
Hawaii County Civil Defense reported no new deaths Tuesday. To date, 28 Hawaii Island residents, including 26 residents of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home, have died from the novel coronavirus. The state has yet to confirm the last 13 deaths.
