State health officials reported 24 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday on Hawaii Island, bringing Hawaii County’s total case count to 493 since Feb. 28.
The two dozen Hawaii Island cases announced Saturday were among 221 new cases across the state, according to the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center. To date, 9,693 Hawaii residents have tested positive.
Oahu reported 191 new cases, bringing the state’s most populous island’s total count to 8,765 while Maui County reported five new cases, raising its count to 352. Kauai County’s tally held steady at 57. To date, 26 residents have also tested positive while out of the state.
Of the 9,693 cases identified in Hawaii since Feb. 28, some 6,762 of those cases are still considered active. That includes 270 of the known cases on Hawaii Island.
Statewide, 592 COVID-19 patients have required hospitalization, including 19 on Hawaii Island, according to the center’s noon update.
The center also reported three new coronavirus-related deaths on Oahu, but provided no additional details.
Of the 84 deaths reported among Hawaii residents, 69 were on Oahu, eight were on Maui, three were on Hawaii Island, and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.
The center has yet to report Hawaii Island’s latest two deaths. The department said it must confirm the death through a verification process before releasing the information. If confirmed, the statewide death toll will stand at 86.
On Saturday, Hilo Medical Center said no deaths were reported at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo.
In addition, Avalon Healthcare, the managing company running the veterans home operations, revised its death toll to five Saturday.
“One resident who died had a pending PCR test, tested positive with the rapid/antigen test at the Emergency Department. PCR results that came back that last night was negative, according to Avalon,” an update posted by the Hilo Medical Center reads.
