Kona officers arrested 13 of the drivers while South Hilo officers arrested three and South Kohala officers two, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department.
So far this year, there have been 615 DUI arrests compared with 749 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 503 major accidents so far this year compared with 643 during the same period last year.
Thirteen fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday morning, police said. By this time in 2019, 14 people had perished.
