Expect delays when traveling through Waimea starting Sunday evening when the county restricts Mamalahoa Highway to a single lane amid ongoing road improvements.
Starting at 6 p.m. Sunday, the highway will be reduced to one lane of travel 24 hours a day through 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, between Mana Road and the West Hawaii Office of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands. Work is weather permitting.
Work will consist of removal of the existing road, excavation, installation of new road subbase and base, paving, and temporary striping.
Motorists should expect delays during the work and are encouraged to detour using Mana Road to Kamamalu Street. Electronic message boards and advanced warning signs will be placed along the highway. Traffic control officers/flaggers will also be on the project site to direct traffic.
