DOH reports 236 new COVID-19 cases

State health officials on Thursday reported 236 new cases of COVID-19 and two additional coronavirus-related deaths.

With the new cases, Hawaii’s total case count now stands at 5,844 since Feb. 28. The state’s 44th and 45th coronavirus-related deaths occurred among an Oahu man over age 60 and a Lanai man between the ages of 40 and 59 years old.

Of the new cases, 230 were on Oahu, five were on Hawaii Island and one was on Maui, according to the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center.

The majority of the cases have been reported on Oahu at 5,340 cases. Maui County has recorded 263 cases, Hawaii County 164 and Kauai County 54. Twenty-three residents have tested positive while out of the state.

Of the Hawaii residents who have tested positive for COVID-19, 2,031 of those cases have since recovered and been released from isolation. Thirty of the Big Island’s 164 known COVID-19 cases to date remained active Thursday.

Statewide, 317 or 5% of COVID-19 patients have required hospitalization, including seven on Hawaii Island. According to the Hawaii County Civil Defense, two Big Islanders were hospitalized on Thursday.

Of the 45 deaths reported among Hawaii residents, 37 were on Oahu, seven were on Maui and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.
