Hazardous waste collection event postponed
The Hawaii County Department of Environmental Management’s Household Hazardous Waste collection event scheduled for Saturday at Kealakehe High School has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
No new date has been set.

Maunakea Scholars program announces scholarship recipients
A trio of students pursuing degrees in astronomy recently received scholarships via the Maunakea Scholars program.
Awarded annually to top-performing seniors in the Maunakea Scholars program, the Hokuala (rising star) Scholarship supports students pursuing degrees in astronomy. Shanen Arellano and Nathan Weir each were awarded $5,000 and Amanda Shiff was awarded $1,000.
‘Coffee with a Cop’
is Monday
Kona Community Policing Officers will be hosting a “Coffee with a Cop” event from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Menehune Coffee Co. in Honaunau.
“Coffee with a Cop” encourages community members to get to know their police officers over a cup of coffee. This casual event has no agenda and topics of conversation can range from sharing personal stories to discussing neighborhood issues.
The public is encouraged to stop by and get to know your district and Community Police Officers over a cup of coffee; discuss topics of mutual interest and concern. Menehune Coffee Co. is located at 84-5227 Mamalahoa Highway in Honaunau.
The Hawaii Police Department noted that the event will adhere to all social distancing guidelines and maintaining a 6-foot distance and wearing of masks is required. Tables and chairs will be sanitized after each use.
The event will be subject to change with regard to COVID-19 restrictions and or additional proclamations issued by county and state government, the department cautioned.
