Big Island police arrest 14 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 14 motorists for suspected drunken driving between July 27 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and one was younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested eight of the drivers while South Hilo officers arrested four and Puna officers two, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 518 DUI arrests compared with 652 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 458 major accidents so far this year compared with 565 during the same period last year.

Twelve fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, 13 people had perished.
