Keauhou Canoe Club announces winners of $1,500 scholarships

Keauhou Canoe Club has announced the award of the James F. Rogers Academic Achievement $1,500 scholarship to Desiree Camacho from Kealakehe High School.

This scholarship is awarded to a west side outrigger canoe paddler (at least three years at the club or high school sport level) who has shown excellence in academics, extracurricular activities, and community service.

Some of Desiree’s accomplishments as a scholar and community volunteer include the following: a GPA of 4.154; class rank of 1/216; junior and senior class president; valuable leader and team mate with paddling and tennis teams; Interact Club, National Honor Society, and charity fundraiser volunteer.

Desiree is a well-rounded student who organizes her work and activities effectively. She is the sixth Kealakehe graduate to receive this scholarship and plans to pursue aeronautical engineering at California State/Long Beach or California State Polytechnic.

Keauhou Canoe Club also announced the award of the Mike Haines Meritorious Achievement $1,500 scholarship to Keilana Crane from Konawaena High School.

This scholarship is awarded to a west side outrigger canoe paddler (at least three years at the club or high school sport level) who has demonstrated excellent academics, extra-curricular activities, and community service.

Some of Keilana’s accomplishments as a scholar and community volunteer include the following: GPA of 3.897; class rank of 11/271; challenges herself with balancing AP classes, school sports, community services with the utmost integrity; volunteer with Ironman Aid Station, trail building at Palamanui, cleaning KCC grounds; officer of National Arts Honors Society, and Environmental Activist Club.

She has paddled four years at Keauhou and was a member of the first under-18 women’s crew at Queen Liliuokalani Long Distance Race. She is the seventh Konawaena graduate to receive this scholarship and plans to major in liberal arts/psychology at UH Community College-Palamanui and then transfer to University of Hawaii-Manoa or UH-Hilo.
