Hawaii Island police arrested 11 motorists for suspected drunken driving between June 1 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and two were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested five drivers while officers in South Kohala, Puna and South Hilo arrested one motorist in each district, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department.
So far this year, there have been 367 DUI arrests compared with 506 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 344 major accidents so far this year compared with 400 during the same period last year.
Nine fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, 10 people had perished.
