Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for suspected drunken driving between May 11 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and two were under age 21.
Puna officers arrested six drivers while officers in South Hilo arrested four and Kona three, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Two drivers were arrested by officers in South Kohala.
So far this year, there have been 330 DUI arrests compared with 436 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 305 major accidents so far this year compared with 366 during the same period last year.
Eight fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, six people had perished.
