Hawaii Island police arrested nine motorists for suspected drunken driving between April 20 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and one was younger than age 21.
South Hilo officers arrested three drivers while officers in Puna and Kona arrested two motorists in each district, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala and North Kohala arrested one driver in each district.
So far this year, there have been 290 DUI arrests compared with 362 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 263 major accidents so far this year compared with 316 during the same period last year.
Eight fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, six people had perished.
