Anna Mills

Anna Lei Mills, 88, of Kapaau, died Feb. 24, 2020, at home. Born in Puuanahulu, she was a retired waitress with the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and a member of the St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Kohala.

Private services held. Friends are invited from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 21 at the residence of Anna Mills, 53-4192 Akoni Pule Highway, for a celebration of life luncheon. Casual attire.

She is survived by daughter, LaVanda (Richard) Salas of Papaikou; sons, Lester Mills and Curtis Mills of Kohala; sisters, Helen Sing and Rose Coit of Kohala; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews.

Juana Mendoza

Juana “Saning” Datuin Mendoza, 100, of Keaau, died March 14, 2020 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born Jan. 17, 1920, in Mapandan, Pangasinan, Philippines, she was retired from the former Royal Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Co., a seamstress and member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and Keaau Nutrition Center.

Friends may call at 5:30 p.m. March 25 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 6:30 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 9 a.m. March 26 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Keaau for a 10 a.m. Mass. Burial follows at Homelani Memorial Park Ilima Section. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by son, Armando (Lisa) Mendoza of Hilo; daughter, Gloria (David Watson) Mendoza-Watson of Keaau; one grandchild, two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Tinson Kun Luey

Tinson Kun Luey, 39, of Des Moines, Washington, died March 4, 2020 at Harbor View Medical Center in Washington. Born in Pipi, Melem, Kosrae, he was a night auditor.

Friends may call 8-10 a.m. March 27 at Kona Outdoor Circle for a service. Burial to follow at Hawi County Cemetery.

He is survived by wife, Megan Luey; daughter, Mary Auslynn Luey; son, Henrick Luey, all of Des Moines, Wash.

Brian Tavares

Brian Matthew Tavares, 57, of Kailua-Kona, died March 9, 2020, at Kona Community Hospital. Born March 12, 1962, in Hilo, he was the owner of Viking Services of Hawaii, president of Apostles MC of Kona and member of Kai Ehitu Canoe Club.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. March 27 at St. Michael’s Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Remembrance gathering will be held at a later date. Condolences to the family may be sent to P.O. Box 5323, Kailua-Kona, HI 96745.

He is survived by wife, Suzanna Tavares of Kailua-Kona; son, Bronson (Tabitha) Tavares of Colorado; mother, Dolores Tavares; brothers, Michael Tavares Sr. both of Hilo, Robert (Verna) Tavares of Captain Cook, Earl Tavares of Kailua-Kona; three grandchildren, numerous friends, nieces and nephews.

Francis Nakano

Francis T. Nakano, 89, of Hilo, died March 7, 2020, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired heavy equipment operator and mechanic for Allied Aggregates and a hunter.

Friends may call 4-5 p.m. March 27 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 5 p.m. celebration of life.

He is survived by son, Daryl Nakano of Hilo; hanai sons, Fred Fujiwara of Hilo, Sheldon Yokomizu of Hilo; sister, Jeri Nakano of Hilo; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Gertrude Sato

Gertrude “Lei” Leilani Sato, 70, of Laupahoehoe, died March 7, 2020 in Hilo. Born Aug. 1, 1949, in North Hilo, she was a retired Department of Education cafeteria worker and custodian and a member of the Laupahoehoe Congregational Church.

Friends may call 4-6 p.m. March 28 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel for a 6 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 10 a.m. March 29 at Laupahoehoe Congregational Church for a service. Casual attire; flower lei are welcomed.

She is survived by sons, Dale (Joan) Sato and Don (Monica) Sato of Laupahoehoe; daughter, Corilinn Sato of Las Vegas, Nevada; brothers, David Nahakuelua Jr. of Kona, Lawrence (Elise Nakamura) Nahakuelua and Roland Nahakuelua of Hilo; sisters, Edna (Kelen) Izumi, Vivian (Wally Denis) Nahakuelua and Elaine (Eric) Kahihikolo of Kailua-Kona, Irene Nahakuelua and Thelma (Walter) Spencer, of Hilo, and Lynn (Virgelio Licoan) Nahakuelua of Waimea; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
