A wind advisory has been posted for the Big Island summits through 6 p.m. Friday.
An upper-level trough passing north of the islands will produce strong southwest to west winds over the summits of the Big Island through Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu. The strong winds may increase to the point that a high wind warning will be needed.
Southwest to west winds of 40 to 55 mph with gusts near 65 mph are expected for the Maunakea and Mauna Loa summits above 8,000 feet in elevation.
Forecasters cautioned that winds this strong can make driving and walking difficult. The winds can forcefully open and close doors, possibly causing injuries.
