Claravel Escobar

Claravel Mercado Escobar, 24, of Kailua-Kona, died Feb. 6, 2020 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Nov. 24, 1995, in Hilo, she was a receptionist at Kanaloa resorts, and a member of River of Life Church (Assembly of God) in Naalehu.

Services held.

She is survived by son, Kahiau Escobar Nakata of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Kylena-Angel Escobar and Maria Elena Murphy-Escobar, both of Pahala; mother, Reynie Mercado of Waiohinu; stepmother, Blossom Kailiawa of Pahala; brother, Aaron (Rachel) Intendencia of Hilo; sister, Filipina Escobar of San Francisco, Melanie Intendencia of Hilo, Ermguard (Vesa) Escobar of Alaska, Joy Escobar of Waiohinu, Babylynn Escobar of Naalehu, Rebecca Escobar and Korina Escobar of Pahala, Roxanne Eder of Las Vegs; hanai sister, Cherish Kaliawa of Ocean View; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jeannine Kimball

Jeannine Alice Kimball, 87, of Hawi, died Feb. 12, 2020 at her residence. Born May 22, 1932, in France, she was a secretary for Global Association.

Services held.

She is survived by sons, Philip (Kei) Kimball of Okinawa, Christopher (May) Kimball of Hawi; daughter, Francine (Mike) Maynard of Boise, ID; three grandchildren; one uncle and aunt; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Rowena Jones

Rowena Elizabeth Jones, 81, of Kailua-Kona, died Feb. 14, 2020 at Rosalinda Ganir’s Care Home. Born June 27, 1938, in Hilo, she was a teacher at Kealakehe Elementary School, secretary treasurer for William Jones Insurance Co., and member of St. Joseph’s Alumni.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Feb. 28 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hilo for Mass at 10 a.m. to be followed by burial at Homelani Memorial Park in Hilo. The family requests casual attire and flowers are welcome.

She is survived by husband, William Jones of Kailua-Kona; brother, Hugh Andrews of Claremont, California; sister, Clare Andrews of Hilo.

Ichiyo Nishimoto

Ichiyo Tarumoto Nishimoto, 98, of Papaikou, died Feb. 2, 2020 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Onomea, she was retired from the former Mauna Kea Sugar Co. and a member of Hilo Meishoin, Honomu Henjoji Mission, Moirton Camp Kumiai, Kamana Senior Center and Waiakea Recreational Center.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

She is survived by son, Dale (Yuko) Nishimoto; daughters, Noelle (Tim) Appelbe, Stephanie (Steve) Mitchell, Ann Nishimoto; sister, Miyoko Chun; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Demetrio Costales

Demetrio Erece Costales, 98, of Hilo, died Feb. 13, 2020 at his residence. Born June 10, 1921, in Ayaoan Luna, La Union Philippines, he was a retired dump truck operator for the former Hamakua Sugar Plantation Co. and a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Friends may call 6-7 p.m. March 5 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel for a 7 p.m. service. Friends may again call 8-10 a.m. March 6 at St. Joseph Catholic in Hilo for Mass at 10 a.m. Casual attire; flowers and lei are welcome. Burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park (Ilima Section) at 11 a.m.

He is survived by wife, Marie Dalmacio Costales of Hilo; son, Arden (Danette) Costales of Hilo; daughters, Marie Lei Costales of Hilo and Fern (Ryan) Ellis of Huntington Beach, California; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Frank Hammer

Dr. Franklin “Frank” Edward Hammer, 72, of Keaau, died Jan. 3, 2020, at home. He was born in Cincinnati and was an anesthesiologist with Hilo Medical Center and Hilo Surgical Center, a member of Glad Tidings Church and a U.S. Army Medical Corp. veteran.

Friends may call 9-11 a.m. Feb. 29 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. celebration of life. Casual attire; no flowers.

He is survived by son, Steven (Josselyn Ceron) Hammer of Taylorsville, Utah; daughter, Felicia (Alexander Webster) Hammer of Kaneohe, Oahu, Elizabeth (Glenn) Timbal and Amy Evangelista of Hilo; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
