Police say a man was killed Thursday morning after being struck by multiple vehicles on Highway 130, just south of the Keaau Transfer Station.
The man, whose identity hasn’t been released, was standing in the Hilo-bound inner lane when he was struck by at least three vehicles at about 6 a.m., the Hawaii Police Department said said.
The pedestrian was unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead at 8:46 a.m. at Hilo Medical Center.
The incident snarled traffic on Highway 130, Highway 11 and several secondary roads during morning rush hour.
Neither alcohol nor speeding are believed to be factors in the collision, police said.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
This is the fifth traffic fatality of 2020 compared to two at this time last year.
