Trial with no witnesses is a criminal’s dream
The fearful Republican senators told the American people that no witnesses will be allowed in the trial of Donald Trump. I think we can all agree, Democrat or Republican, this is every criminal’s dream, a trial with no witnesses.

‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ in real life
I remember being highly amused as a child reading Hans Christian Andersons’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” What a kick to see it in real life with 51 senators voting to not hear witnesses in the Trump impeachment trial

Scrutiny needed on rate request
Now that the crazy impeachment trial is essentially over and the Democratic party has assured the president of a landslide victory in November, maybe the people of Hawaii can now focus on real issues close to home.
Recently, Young Brothers has asked for a 35% increase to its rates as they are having difficulty making a profit because they spent so much money on capital reinvestment? I guess it is difficult to factor in future expenses when you have no real competition to keep your business senses sharp. I am sure that they think there 35% request is reasonable based on how our legislators think pay raises of similar amounts that they gave themselves last year are all good and much deserved.
When you think that someone is stealing from you, I for one think that a little investigation is in order and in the case of Young Brothers you definitely need to scrutinize this request. Support Rep. Ed Case and his push to repeal the Jones Act that has cost the people of Hawaii millions over the years and is the singular reason that Hawaii remains the most expensive place in America to live.
Monopolies are always bad and this one needs to be history so the people of Hawaii can maybe have a little money back in their pockets to spend on better educators, doctors, hospitals etc. The list is long but start by getting the thieves out of our pockets and we can take some positive steps in this direction.
I have stated in previous letters that all politics are local and that has never been more true now, so please people of Hawaii let the national politics that you have no say in play out and focus on our own backyard where you really have a voice.

Practice what you preach
It would be interesting to see if any of those protectors of Maunakea show up to help pull weeds from the mountain. Since they profess to be protectors, they should also want to help keep it free of invasive weeds.
