Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Jan. 13 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and two were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested 13 drivers, according to data released Wednesday morning by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala and South Hilo arrested five motorists in each district while officers in Puna arrested four and Ka‘u one.
So far this year, there have been 62 DUI arrests compared with 46 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 56 major accidents so far this year compared with 41 during the same period last year.
One fatality had been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Wednesday morning, police said. By this time in 2018, two people had perished.
